Francia Garage Sixties con Fuzz.

 

Four ex-teenagers whose former bands have met over the previous ten years in a variety of London clubs and English seaside towns, bashing out authentic vintage garage and psychedelia until their hands bled and their Cuban heel boots stank. Flash forward to 1999 and the same four lads find themselves living in the same corner of old London town, drinking in the same hostelries and still fired up about the twisted sounds of the 60’s. Jon ’Mojo’ Mills, Rich Walker, Andy Cornick (the meat and two veg of The Nuthins) are putting together a new group to indulge their lysergic guitar rock ambitions. Other Andy Morten (the spuds of The Nerve and now also in The Bronco Bullfrog) trades his drum kit for a Fender Telecaster and tags along for the ride. This dubious chemical equation creates a deleriously wild and deliciously loud blend of freaked-out fuzz-drenched beer-fuelled rock not heard since the heady days when Status Quo used phasing and Iggy Pop was the drummer in a garage band. They are christened Little Bare Big Bear after incorrectly identifying a well-known star constellation. Immediately, tales of this mythical new act begin circulating. Even a lone live show at North London’s Dirty Water Club can’t convince some speculators that this group actually exists outside the imaginations of it’s members. A deranged afternoon in London’s fabled Toe Rag Studio under the auspices of side-parted sound wizard Liam Watson results in the successful recording of "Little Man" - think SF Sorrow era Pretty Things meet The Open Mind - and "Dr Morgan’s Panacea" - whacky ’68 styled UK psych-pop with a nervous edge - , two self-penned mini-epics which distill the frantic energy of the group’s live act into eight minutes and the first of what should be many great double-headed singles from ’the most exciting new psychedelic rock act in the world’ (it says here).

THE LOONS’ uniquely, multi-national line-up creates a distinctive sound combining the hard, kinetic drive of European freakbeat with the psychotic melodic cool of California’s Sunset Strip circa ‘66. While the band draws heavy inspiration from groups like the Pretty Things, the Yardbirds and Love, they are also fiercely original in their approach, creating their own uniquely intense songs rather than opting to be ’60 garage jukeboxes. Formed in San Diego, California in late 1995, in the last ten years they have evolved into one of the most exciting and original bands on the scene. The band’s line-up features lead singer Mike Stax (ex-Tell-Tale Hearts, Crawdaddys, Hoods), bass player Anja Bungert (previously of the Diaboliks and Thee Cherylinas), guitarists Marc Schroeder (ex-Letdowns) and Chris Marsteller (ex-Chasers), and drummer Mike Kamoo. PARAPHERNALIA, is the second release on UT Records, the label launched by Stax as an offshoot of his long-running UGLY THINGS magazine. PARAPHERNALIA features 10 road-tested original songs including the wild blues-punk wailer “Turned to Stone,” the melodic 12-string folk-rocker “Follow the Rain Down” and the psychedelic Bo Diddley beat epic “Another Life.”

Among potions, skulls, and spells and with an attitude and sound totally crazy, these fans of Screaming Lord Sutch and the donuts are formed in June 2007 in Sanxenxo (Pontevedra) with the aim of spreading the rock’n’roll seed all around the world. With two guitars and a drum (in fact just snare and bass drum), these four cavemen are dedicated to destroying rock’n’roll classics and other dark and hidden pearls. Now they present three own songs and a cover (“That Jim”, Mackey Beers & The Rockitts) in an elegant 7” e.p. recorded in Circo Perrotti Studio by Jorge Explosion and Mike Mariconda.
